Hand to Hand Combat:

Sometimes the enemy gets in so close it becomes a hand to hand, life or death struggle. No time to call for help. Alone you fight to stay alive with your bare hands. “Fix bayonets” in the language of the infantry. Who will be left standing? Have you ever known someone who has gone through such a struggle? You will probably find that he has scares from that desperate moment. Soldiers are given some training in a few necessary skills for such a time, but then its up to them to become proficient on their own time. Most never do, just hoping they never experience such a situation. Thank God, such experiences are not the norm. In the aftermath of such a time often comes nightmares, flashbacks, sudden anger, cold sweats, triggering, and other such symptoms called PTSD. Now there is a different kind of combat that we all experience. All of us need training in spiritual warfare so that we can become overcomers. I talked about this kind of combat in a prior post. However I did not mention a specific passage which speaks of the particular skills needed to prevail in life. These skills are listed in Mark 16: 17-18. “And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.” If you read the next verse you learned these were the last words Jesus spoke to his disciples before ascending back to heaven. So they are important. Here he tell us of the hand to hand combat skills given to his disciples to battle the enemy. But drill is necessary. Have you ever used your hands to heal the sick? Have you eaten something and others got very sick, but you didn’t? Have you ever felt a demon attempt to take you over (sin, temptation) and resisted him successfully? Have you ever spoken in an unknown tongue and seen the enemy of your soul back off from attacking your body or the body of another? To be effective in Spirtual Warfare you need these close in combat skills. Drill these two verses into your soul. Believe you have been given these skills by a loving Father. We all need them. Stronger men whom we admire are overcome. Men we judged smarter, stronger and better connected then ourselves. Why is this? Most don’t have the hand to hand combat skills I speaking of here. They don’t have the faith to believe them. As one gets older he needs learn to fight spirtually against our hidden enemies (Ephesians 6:11-18). One can reach the end of his life and die in one’s sleep; heathy to the end. How is this done? By listening to the Holy Spirit and knowing who we are in Jesus Christ. I have talked about our benefits package in a prior posting (Psalm 103: 2-5). It is sad to see many being overcome because they don’t know how to fight spiritually, or are not practiced in doing so.

In warfare health is extremely important to battlefield success. Physical exercise is an extremely important part of the military’s boot camp experience. In I Timothy 4:8 the bible has this to say: “For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.” I know people and used to tend in this direction that work hard to keep their physical body in outstanding shape. But the bible says such a focus is only good for this life and doesn’t transfer into the next life. So our focus should be on “godliness” which is profitable both in this life and in life eternal. I now put far more of my focus on developing “godliness” than the worldly focus I used to put on daily physical exercise. I have found that satan’s demons work against us to develop sickness and disease and physical exercise though of some value in countering these attacks is of far less value than devoting one’s self to the study of God’s Word in which there are many promises to help us overcome the attacks on our body and soul such as in Isaiah 53:4-5, Matthew 5:17,I Peter 2:24, Luke 10:19 and Mark 16:17 to name a few overcoming verses.
